{"id":167,"date":"2012-07-17T09:02:59","date_gmt":"2012-07-17T08:02:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.coachmentoring.co.uk\/articles\/?p=167"},"modified":"2019-11-05T14:21:01","modified_gmt":"2019-11-05T14:21:01","slug":"using-mindfulness-as-a-coach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.coachmentoring.co.uk\/articles\/2012\/07\/using-mindfulness-as-a-coach\/","title":{"rendered":"Using &#8220;Mindfulness&#8221; as a Coach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-176 size-medium\" style=\"border: 0px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.coachmentoring.co.uk\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Meditation-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Mindfulness as a Coach\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.coachmentoring.co.uk\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Meditation-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.coachmentoring.co.uk\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Meditation-399x300.jpg 399w, https:\/\/www.coachmentoring.co.uk\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Meditation.jpg 438w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>I&#8217;ve been amazed in the last two or three weeks how many coaches have made twitter comments and blogs about using &#8220;Mindfulness&#8221; practice to make you healthier, calmer, more creative, successful etc. However, there is so little written by anyone about how they as a coach are using &#8220;Mindfulness&#8221; apart from signposting their clients towards mindful practice.<\/p>\n<p>So in this blog I wanted to share a few &#8220;Mindfulness&#8221; coaching ideas that I use as a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coachmentoring.co.uk\/consultants.html\">coach<\/a> when I am working with my own clients:<!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Preparing for a <a href=\"\/coaching\/\">coaching session<\/a>, either on your own, or with your client as they arrive for a session, particularly if they are stressed and fraught. A few minutes mindful breathing or a short meditation is a wonderful way to start off your time together.<\/li>\n<li>Maintaining your focus in a mindful manner in the coaching session and being aware of what is going on for the client. Giving them some of the &#8220;unbelievably beautiful attention&#8221; that Nancy Kline writes about in &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/dp\/0706377451\/?tag=googhydr-21&amp;hvadid=4382966960&amp;hvpos=1t1&amp;hvexid=&amp;hvnetw=g&amp;hvrand=250749571010942803&amp;hvpone=&amp;hvptwo=&amp;hvqmt=b&amp;ref=pd_sl_p672b9j6g_b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Time to Think<\/a>&#8220;.<\/li>\n<li>Remaining emotionally detached and not allowing your emotional empathy to take over. &#8220;Mindfulness&#8221; practice enables you to pause mentally and decide what emotions to embrace or not when working with your client.<\/li>\n<li>Using positive psychology techniques in a mindful way:\n<ul>\n<li>Strengths cards or questionnaires<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Savouring&#8221; exercises<\/li>\n<li>Going outside for a walk whilst you coach and appreciate the great beauty of the world<\/li>\n<li>Recognising positive emotions in voice tone, words and body language and pointing these out to your client<\/li>\n<li>Meditation and visualisation techniques<\/li>\n<li>Auto-biographical memory exercises, remembering events\/times when the client was at their best and what it felt like.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These are some of the great ideas you can use as a coach.
