Linda Grant explores the evolution of this function, now seen as being a strategic partner in achieving organisational goals.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->In the 1980s Personnel Management began to change from being a purely administrative function to one that recognised the strategic importance of effective workforce management \u2014 which laid the groundwork for the evolution towards Human Resources.<span>\u00a0<\/span>While personnel describes a workforce adequately \u2014 recognising the labels of \u2018human\u2019 and \u2018resources\u2019 acknowledged the human value of a group of employees.<\/p>\n<h2>Human Resources as a strategic function<\/h2>\n<p>In the last twenty years Human Resources has developed as a strategic function \u2014 in the past it was viewed as a necessity to have in organisations not as a key strategic priority.\u00a0The primary focus for Human Resources (HR) teams has been resource management, aligning workforce planning with business strategy \u2014 viewing employees as resources that are essential for productivity and organisational success; and focusing on necessary HR administration for compliance, performance management, policy and process.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.coachmentoring.co.uk\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/HR-Team-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"HR Team\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-5410\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.coachmentoring.co.uk\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/HR-Team-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.coachmentoring.co.uk\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/HR-Team-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.coachmentoring.co.uk\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/HR-Team-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.coachmentoring.co.uk\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/HR-Team-450x300.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.coachmentoring.co.uk\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/HR-Team.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Since the 2010s there has been a growing movement of HR teams transitioning to becoming the People and Culture team.<span>\u00a0<\/span>HR is being seen as being outdated in describing the rapidly changing work environment.<span>\u00a0<\/span>This change is a clear recognition of how organisations now view their workforce, prioritising the overall employee experience and recognising the importance of a positive workplace culture in achieving business success.<\/p>\n<p>Key drivers of this transition are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Changing workforce expectations<\/li>\n<li>Globalisation and cross-cultural teams<\/li>\n<li>Technological advancements<\/li>\n<li>Social movements<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The positive role for the People and Culture team<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.coachmentoring.co.uk\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Positive-Potato-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Positive Potato\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-5413\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.coachmentoring.co.uk\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Positive-Potato-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.coachmentoring.co.uk\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Positive-Potato-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.coachmentoring.co.uk\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Positive-Potato-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/www.coachmentoring.co.uk\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Positive-Potato.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>There will still be a need for HR administration for compliance, policy and process but the primary role of the People and Culture team is to build a purpose-driven, inclusive and positive work environment with focus on people-first \u2014 the employee experience and engagement using a more values-based approach.<span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p>In this environment where people are seen as being central to the culture, innovation and organisational health, the People and Culture team needs to focus on creating a workplace culture where individuals have a positive experience and can grow and develop in their careers.<span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Some of the areas that the People and Culture team need to prioritise include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>People and Culture strategy<\/li>\n<li>Employer branding<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"\/development\/talent-management.html\">Talent acquisition<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Onboarding and employee retention<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"\/development\/employee-wellbeing.html\">Employee engagement<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Performance management<\/li>\n<li>People and <a href=\"\/development\/team-development-workshops.html\">team development<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"\/development\/leadership-development.html\">Leadership development<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Continuous professional development<\/li>\n<li>Company culture<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"\/about-us\/our-vision.html#edi\">Equity, diversity, inclusion<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Pay and benefits<\/li>\n<li>Technology and data<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Working in Partnership to support \u2018people and culture\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>The focus at Coach Mentoring Ltd., since its inception <span id=\"daysCount\">in 2004<\/span>, has always been on the people in organisations.
