Many of the problems in workplaces, from lack of creativity to failure to use the spectrum of talent within an organisation, are at base communication failures. Prejudice and unconscious bias thrive wherever people do not feel able to have open and authentic conversations about difference. But these can be rapidly overcome when people are able to share and explore together their assumptions about each other—hence diversity dialogue.
How a mentoring culture can support inclusion
During National Inclusion Week 2020, can you put your hand on your heart and say that, your organisation takes a holistic approach to inclusion? Is it embedded into organisational values, people management practices and employee behaviours? Does your organisation give your employees fair opportunities to contribute and develop?
What will flexible working look like for organisations after Covid-19?
Since joining WaterAid as Global Talent Manager in 2018, I have personally benefitted from flexible working. I work part-time — 3 days a week — and worked mostly from home long before Covid-19 came into our lives. This kind of arrangement has generally been considered the exception rather than the rule. But Covid-19 is a game changer and in the new normal, employees will have far greater expectations of their organisations to accommodate their flexible working needs to enable them to achieve an effective work-life balance.
#Blacklivesmatter – thoughts on Racial Injustice from Coach Mentoring Ltd
The whole world has been rocked by the appalling murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis. His sad death has been the catalyst to unlock the world’s feelings about the cruelty, overt discrimination and racial injustice against black people. This is not just a US issue, which is why protests are taking place globally. Racism is abhorrent and although as an organisation we do not normally comment on world events, in this situation, as we did with the Covid-19 pandemic, we feel we must speak out to counteract the apathy and indifference that allows this intolerance and prejudice to exist.
Mentor supervision, where’s the latest research?
A good question and one that Paul Stokes and I were chewing the cud over earlier this week. We have been asked to update our chapter for the second edition of Coaching and Mentoring Supervision and Practice on this very topic. We found the absolute paucity of new research and interest in mentor supervision very disappointing.
Finding my resilience to support my well-being during lockdown
Resilience is something I don’t usually lack—so why am I feeling anxiety and worry? The unprecedented lockdown conditions and uncertainly of what lies ahead after these times, have caused many of us to feel anxiety and worry—and quite rightly so. There are no predetermined rules for the intensity of the emotions we might feel; we don’t need to be preforming a particular role, or be in a specific working environment to experience them.
Introduce virtual yoga for employee well-being during Covid-19
Most of your workforce will be working from home or furloughed. How are they doing? We don’t have to sell you the benefits of yoga, calming practices and of meditation. But have you thought of making virtual yoga part of the lock-down routine? It’s effective support for those people who you have invested in, and who have invested in your organisation?
The Benefits of Journaling using Thorn, Bud & Flower in full blossom
As coaches and mentors, we encourage those we support to write their journal, diaries, or thoughts of the day that has gone or thoughts on the day to come. Susan Dennis explores a simple technique to introduce people to the benefits of journaling.
Covid-19: languishing lettuce, ‘side hustles’ and career transition!
What do languishing lettuce, ‘side hustles’, career transition and the catalyst of Covid-19 have in common? Read on and find out how the current pandemic may be the trigger to reassess your working life and future post lockdown.
Internal coaching and mentoring to support through Covid-19
We are now into the fourth week of Covid-19 lockdown in the UK, but already it is obvious our old ‘normal’ has gone and will not return. I have previously explored how mentoring interventions can support the transitions that individuals’ experience as they engage with this new world. However, in this article I will consider how internal coaching and mentoring can actually improve individual’s ability to reinvent and adapt both themselves and their organisations to thrive in the future.
